You gotta wonder about all the hype going on around the real estate industry don’t you?

You might remember the article in the Financial Review on 3rd June 2011 about the 10,000 agents that have abandoned the profession in the past 10 years… according to the article low-sales volumes and falling commissions play a significant part in the mass exit.

Real estate is a primary focus for all media, wouldn’t you agree? It’s seems to me that when journalists are struggling to find new “stories to sell” … they tend to fall back on the real estate industry because everybody is interested in real estate and the consumer simply loves to hear more evidence of why they shouldn’t trust the word of an agent. Am I right or am I right?

Think about those current affair programs and consider how frequently they go for the jugular when an agent slips up? The media paints a gloomy picture of real estate agents and where possible the industry… you know the drill; agents are unethical, unconscionable rats than scurry in a hurry from back alleys to the homes of the consumer where they burrow beneath tree lawns in front of homes ready to pounce and feed off each other’s listings.

And wait, there’s more… what about the Australian Government. Their idea of “getting it under control” was to implement CPD training. And we all know there are varying opinions on the effectiveness of that.  

Yes, there are all types of people in every industry and Yes there are agents that are unethical and behave inappropriately. But, that’s not the majority!

Yes lots of real estate agents are calling it quits, shutting the doors, hanging up their boots. And as with the cycle of life, for every agent that leaves the industry there is at least one or more person jumping on board and thrilled at the excitement of joining the real estate profession. As an industry trainer in licensing and professional development, I see day by day the innovation, the brilliance and passion in those new to the industry and I gotta say it’s awe inspiring.

Do you remember the time when that was you?  When you decided to find your passion because making this important commitment to yourself is what life’s about. What are you telling yourself now?

Getting the Most from Life

VALUES and GOALS It’s the TRUTH – What You Focus on is What you Get

After delivering an exhilarating training session yesterday on behavioural profiling and the psychology behind human behaviour at Darlinghurst NSW, I feel blessed and honoured to have had such a truly supportive group. The fences were down allowing a constant flow of transformation in a field of aspirations. It has inspired me to share with you a story… Would that be okay?

So what is the TRUE reason WHY you should set goals… because once you understand WHY, you can easily understand their POWER behind them.

Firstly, the experience of it is so exciting… Take yourself back to a time in the past when you have accomplished a goal… see yourself in that moment, listen to what you were telling yourself at that time and feel the exhilaration that comes with the accomplishment. That sense of achievement in winning against all odds… it’s something no-one can ever take that away from you. You earned it, it’s yours forever. Accomplishing goals is very exciting and it builds your confidence… it is forever… but that’s not the real reason you set goals.

Secondly, implementing your action plan for success… working towards your goals… that doing makes you become “more”. More valuable, more experienced, wiser, stronger… a better person. But again, this is not the real reason you set goals.

A third reason to set goals is that it gives you direction and control over your life. If you don’t set goals your life will be run by others…by circumstance… not by you.

Hang out with me for a while in your imagination… to help you understand the concept of direction and control in your life, let’s go on an adventure, a variation of a story once told by Earl Nightingale on the difference between not having goals and having goals. Go into your mind and imagine a beautiful “tall ship” one like “The Bounty”. You have been invited onto the Bounty to enjoy the history and tales of its many adventures – you see the captain at the helm and a crew is all working together to set the sails and harness the great power of the wind. Now that ship sets sail and the course is mapped out, they know where they are going and how long it will take to get to their destination and you know, 9,999 times out of 10,000 that tall ship, The Bounty arrives at it’s destination.

Now imagine this time that the Bounty as NO Captain at the wheel and NO crew, NO goals, NO destination – it has been released from our breathtaking Sydney Harbour, someone has just pushed it from its moorings and it drifts out through the heads and out to sea… and what do you think happens ?

The Bounty would surely sink and so much treasure would be lost – there is no one controlling it – circumstances will just toss “The Bounty” about . Your life is like that ship – you have to take control – set the course, instruct the crew or your life will be run by the wind, the sea of circumstance and other people. It’s easy to find many people who will jump on board YOUR ship and start sailing your life away – many jobs are like that. Don’t you think?

Make this your year – grab the wheel – you set the course and it starts with your goals. Create your goals now, 30 days, 90 days and one year goals… make them real, make an appointment with yourself for 31st December 2010 and bring in the New year 2011 being the best you have ever been, trust that your goals will allow you to control the direction and destination of your life.

So again, WHY we set goals… it’s not even for the direction and control they give you.

The real value, the real purpose, of goal setting is to …

are you ready…

this is BIG…

this will change your life forever! The real reason to set goals is to INSPIRE yourself! That’s the key, goals should have you jumping out of bed in the morning, goals should have you excited, awake, active, energised, get you away from the TV, the football or whatever it is that distracts you from living YOUR life at the level of your aspirations… you should… you deserve it. The inspiration improves your health, your focus, your productivity. Do it now, and enjoy working for hours without fatigue and living a lifestyle worthy of you.

Don’t create goals to meet a bunch of deadlines. That’s not what we are doing it for. It’s not about the accomplishment; it’s not about the added value of who we become. It’s not about the control over our future direction or destination.

Setting goals is setting yourself up for INSPIRATION. Once you get hooked – you want that inspiration that goal setting gives you. Take some time to write out a few goals for the next year why not take them right up to New Year’s eve 2010 and bring in the New Year 2011 as the person you know you are meant to be… a person you can be proud of … create goals that inspire you and get you up early each morning.

Go on a sacred mission, mend your wounds, smash the chains of old beliefs and find yourself in a place beyond recognition in a kingdom of all consuming fascination at your abilities look back at memories once dark and cold and embrace them for the positive learnings they offer, the gifts waiting there for your return , take those gifts into the here and now and into your future bright with promise… and as you’re drifting in the stream of this wonderful world we’re so privileged to live in, drink the love and happiness and abundance it offers.

Take control and make it happen.
